Why a dedicated site for a single system?
TYPO3 is a content management system that is used in Austria, Germany and Switzerland above all where many pages, many languages and many editors come together: at hotels, municipalities, associations and mid-sized companies. Many of these sites were built years ago and have simply kept running ever since. That is exactly where the problem lies.
Each TYPO3 version receives security updates for a limited time only. After that they are available only for a fee through the ELTS program, or not at all. Anyone still running TYPO3 9, 10 or 11 today operates a website with open windows, and with the NISG 2026 (Austria's NIS2 law) this is no longer just a technical risk for many companies, but also a matter of proving compliance.

From old to current in a single project
Over the past weeks we have upgraded several TYPO3 sites across multiple major versions. For the Vitalhotel Bad Radkersburg, we went from TYPO3 9.5 to 13.4 in one go, and from PHP 7.3 to 8.4 along with it. For PUREA, we moved the site from TYPO3 12 to 13.4 and at the same time took it over into our own hosting.
What I learned along the way: an upgrade is only finished when the whole site is running again, not when the version number is right. That is why we always work on a copy, go through each version one by one, and in the end compare every single page of the old version with the new one, text for text. At the Vitalhotel, 200 of 211 pages were identical in text afterwards; the other eleven had already been broken before and work again now. Only when this comparison checks out do we switch over.
